WHAT IS FOAM ROLLING?
Foam rolling is self-myofascial release which is pretty much just the technical term for self massage. It is used by athletes of all skill levels as well as physical therapists to inhibit overactive muscles.  Foam rolling can help you relieve stress and lower back pain, improve alignment and stability as well as help to improve overall balance.  It is made of a dense textured foam, making it portable, lightweight and easy to keep clean

KEY BENEFITS
▪Regeneration of muscle tissue
▪Increases functionality in everyday life
▪Reduces pain and fatigue
▪Increases energy for an active lifestyle
▪Reduces instability
▪Increases body's ability to manage stress
▪Helps promote lean muscle development

TARGET AREAS
▪Legs
▪Back
▪Balance
▪Body Muscles

I was lucky enough to get to try out the GoFit foam roller. It has been a great addition to my home gym.  Let me just tell you... I'm not sure if it should be considered a workout product of a torture device.  If you have ever foam rolled a sore muscle or tried to roll out a knot, or a trigger point, then you know exactly what I am talking about.  It can be pretty painful and I don't mean the "hurts so good" type of pain.  BUT once you endure a little bit of added pain, your muscles will thank you.

The GoFit foam roller also comes with an instruction flip book detailing several self-massage exercises.  It will give you complete instruction on how to roll out your latissimus dorsi, triceps, teres major, upper back, hamstrings, glutes, quads, IT band, calves, hip flexors, shins, adductors, glute massage - piriformis, and lat stretch and reach.

It has been especially helpful to me after my runs on the treadmill.  When I run on the treadmill as opposed to outside on the pavement, I tend to get really sore calves.  Foam rolling them out really helps.

Nice and sweaty - post run

Rolling out my calves to avoid muscle knots and cramps

When I feel a really sore knot, I cross my legs and press into the roller as firmly as possibly.  I push the palms of my hands into the ground and lift my body off the ground.  This helps me press more firmly into the roller and it also good for strengthening the core.

All in all I am happy to have this as an addition to my home gym and to have added foam rolling into my post workout routine.

  1. My boyfriend got me into foam rolling and I love it. I also have a stick that I take with me when I run half marathons so I can work some of the stiffness out right after those long runs rather than immediately getting into my car and paying the price later.
